Our Charity - Stepping Stone House
At Fit Mango we feel its important to give something back to the community.....
So our running club will be strictly not for profit. We will aim to support community based charities that are doing something we find inspiring and amazing.
This time we are delighted to support Stepping Stone House.
Stepping Stone House was established in 1989 by a group of caring Australians. They were concerned by the number of homeless teenagers in our community.
Stepping Stone House, established in 1989 is an Out of Home Care service that provides accommodation, safety and security for eight young people, between the ages of 14 to 18 yrs of age who cannot live at home. These reasons vary from rejection, abandonment, neglect, abuse, family breakdown, mental health issues, addiction issues, disassociation and disconnection from family and extended family and communities and so forth.
These young people are often forced from home at an early age, and have experienced extra significant trauma from constant ‘finding” of new placements and places of accommodation. Stepping Stone House is a medium to long term service with the aim of providing stability and a place of home. Its core aim is to reintegrate young people back into employment and/or education with supports such as counselling, case management, health and hygiene, cooking classes, budgeting skills, personal development, communication skills and behavioural skills. Key elements of the program include personal development, living skills and vocational skills. Where possible they also aim to improve the relationships amongst the families, even if restoration is beyond repair.
Stepping Stone House does not receive any government funding, however the Committee, staff, volunteers and young people are dependent on community donations, individual donations and the sponsorship that the Committee of Stepping Stone House provides.
